Adult Street Dance

Just Dance!

Perhaps you love dancing on a night out. Perhaps a great song comes on and you can’t help moving.

Or perhaps you’ve always fancied learning some proper routines but never quite had the confidence to walk into a dance class.

Adult Street Dance at Lisa Mason School of Dance is your chance to just dance.

No examinations.

No previous dance training required.

No expectation that you already know what you’re doing.

Come along, learn a routine, enjoy the music and have some fun.

Dance to music you know and love

Adult Street Dance has a very different feel from a traditional dance class.

Lisa teaches routines to popular music, using energetic choreography influenced by Street and other contemporary dance styles.

The music and routines can change, giving you the chance to experience different ways of moving and performing.

You’ll work on:

• rhythm and musicality
• coordination
• learning choreography
• movement and control
• performance and expression
• confidence

But you don’t need to arrive thinking about any of those things.

You can simply come because you want to dance.

“I haven’t danced since I was younger…”

That’s absolutely fine. One of the biggest barriers to joining an adult dance class is often simply walking through the door for the first time.

People worry everyone else will be better than them.

They worry they won’t remember the routine.

They worry they’ll go the wrong way.

At some point, everybody does.

Lisa breaks the choreography down and gives you time to get used to the movements before putting everything together with the music.

There will be moments when it clicks straight away.

There will also be moments when half the class goes left while Lisa goes right.

We carry on. You don’t have to get every step right to enjoy the class, and before long a routine starts to take shape as everyone grows in confidence.

No experience required

Adult Street Dance was created as an opportunity for adults to dance, learn a routine and have fun without needing previous dance technique.

That is still the point of the class.

If you’ve danced before, great.

If you haven’t, that’s fine too.

This isn’t about comparing yourself with the person next to you. It’s about enjoying the music, learning something new and discovering what you can do.

The exercise isn’t really the point

You will certainly get moving. Street Dance uses your whole body and routines can be energetic. You’ll be concentrating on the music, remembering choreography and trying to persuade your arms and feet to do what Lisa has just shown you.

But the exercise isn’t really the reason for the class. The dancing is.

When you’re concentrating on putting a routine together, an hour can pass remarkably quickly.

And there is a real sense of satisfaction when something that seemed impossible at the start suddenly falls into place.

Learn the routine – then enjoy dancing it

At first, most people concentrate on simply remembering where their feet and arms are supposed to go.

As the routine becomes more familiar, you can relax a little and start responding to the music.

That is when confidence begins to grow.

The same movements can suddenly feel completely different once you add energy, expression and a little attitude.

Nobody expects that on your first night.

It comes with practice.

Learn with Lisa

Adult Street Dance is taught by Lisa Mason, an Associate Teacher of the British Association of Teachers of Dancing (BATD).

Lisa has taught dance for many years across a wide range of styles and age groups.

She knows that adults can feel nervous about joining a dance class, particularly if they haven’t danced before or haven’t done it for years.

Her approach is to break routines down, give people time to learn them and create a class where you can improve without feeling judged.

The original idea behind Just Dance was deliberately simple: No experience required. Learn a routine. Have fun.

That remains a pretty good description.

Dance in a proper studio

Classes take place at LMSD Studios in Haverhill, with:

• sprung dance floors
• full-length mirrors
• air conditioning
• accessible facilities
• easy parking

It’s a proper dance environment, without the pressure of feeling that you have to be a “proper dancer” before you arrive.

What should I wear?

Keep it simple. Wear comfortable clothes that allow you to move freely and suitable trainers or dance shoes.

There is no need to turn up dressed like you’re appearing in a music video.

If you’re unsure, ask Lisa before your first class.

Fancy giving it a go?

If you like music and fancy doing something a little different, come and try Adult Street Dance.

You don’t need a dance partner.

You don’t need previous experience.

And you definitely don’t need to wait until you think you’re “good enough”.

Come along. Learn the routine. Enjoy the music. Just Dance.
