Street Dance

Dance with energy, confidence and attitude

Street Dance is all about movement, music and performance. At Lisa Mason School of Dance, children learn energetic routines to popular music, developing rhythm, coordination, confidence and performance skills while having plenty of fun along the way.

Lisa has taught Street Dance at LMSD for many years. now The class was originally known as STEPZ, with a simple message that still sums it up rather well: Dance with attitude!

Move to the music

Street Dance has a very different feel from traditional dance classes.

The movements are strong, energetic and expressive. Children learn choreography influenced by Street and Hip Hop styles, working with the beat, character and energy of the music.

Classes help dancers develop:

  • rhythm and musicality
  • coordination
  • control and precision
  • energy and stamina
  • confidence
  • performance and stage presence
  • the ability to learn and remember choreography

As children become more confident, they begin to put more of themselves into their dancing rather than simply reproducing the movements they have been shown.

That is when a routine really starts to come alive.

More than learning the steps

Street Dance is not just about remembering a routine.

Lisa encourages children to think about how they perform it too – the energy they bring, how they respond to the music and how they work together as a group.

As dancers progress, they become more confident with longer combinations and more challenging choreography.

There is plenty to learn, but plenty of opportunity simply to enjoy dancing to great music too.

Some children just want to dance

Not every child wants to wear a ballet leotard.

Not every child is initially interested in examinations or formal dance training. Some just want to dance!

Street Dance gives children another way into the world of dance – one that can feel relaxed, energetic and accessible while still giving them real skills to develop.

No previous dance experience is needed.

Children progress at different rates, and Lisa encourages each dancer to grow in confidence as their coordination, movement and performance skills improve.

From class to performance

Street Dance is made for the stage. It has featured regularly in LMSD productions and community performances, giving dancers the chance to take the routines they have learned in class and perform them in front of an audience.

Working towards a performance gives children something exciting to focus on and helps them develop confidence, teamwork and stage presence.

Street Dance brings energy to a show – and children often love the chance to really perform the routine rather than simply dance the steps.

Learn with Lisa

Street Dance is taught by Lisa Mason, an Associate Teacher of the British Association of Teachers of Dancing (BATD).

Lisa has many years of experience teaching children across a wide range of dance styles and knows that different dancers respond to different kinds of music and movement.

Her Street Dance classes combine choreography and performance with the straightforward enjoyment that originally made STEPZ popular – dancing together, building confidence and having fun.

Children are encouraged to work hard and keep improving, without taking away the reason they wanted to dance in the first place.

What should my child wear?

Street Dance does not require traditional ballet clothing.

Comfortable clothing that allows plenty of movement is ideal, such as an LMSD T-shirt with leggings or joggers, together with suitable Jazz shoes or trainers.

Speak to Lisa before your child’s first class and she can advise you on what they will need.

Come and give Street Dance a try

If your child enjoys music, likes learning routines or simply loves to dance, Street Dance could be a great place to start. No previous dance experience is needed.

Come along, learn the moves, enjoy the music and dance with attitude!
